Since the days when King Alfonso VI (1030-1109) granted a charter for a hostel to a local hermit named Gaucelmo, the villagers of Rabanal have provided continuous hospitality on one of the world's best-known pilgrimage routes, the Camino de Santiago de Compostela.

After about 7 kilometres you reach the small village of Rabanal del Camino. Just as you enter the village you pass the 18th century Ermita del Bendito Cristo de la Vera Cruz. This village is indelibly linked with the Camino de Santiago due in part to its location on the pass through the mountains. In the Middle Ages this was an important stop.

In the autonomous community of Castilla-y-León, between the towns of Astorga and Ponferrada is the village of Rabanal del Camino. The first of its kind in this rural hamlet, Refugio Gaucelmo was established by the CSJ in 1991, in association with one of the Friends of the Camino associations of the local area of El Bierzo.
