April 2023. April is on the horizon, and with it, the re-opening of Refugio Gaucelmo in Rabanal del Camino. Yesterday, I revisited Rabanal where - as in every year since its inauguration in 1991 - a working party was spending the week running up to 1 April prepatring for a new pilgrim season.

After about 7 kilometres you reach the small village of Rabanal del Camino. Just as you enter the village you pass the 18th century Ermita del Bendito Cristo de la Vera Cruz. This village is indelibly linked with the Camino de Santiago due in part to its location on the pass through the mountains. In the Middle Ages this was an important stop.

In the autonomous community of Castilla-y-León, between the towns of Astorga and Ponferrada is the village of Rabanal del Camino. Gaucelmo was a fitting name because he was a 12th century local hermit who built a church, a hospice and hospital for pilgrims. His spirit lives on for I received one of the warmest welcomes from the three hospitaleros.
